Editions Fawbush is pleased to announce its third project with Wayne Gonzales, Self Portrait as a Young Marine, 2007. The image, a rare example of self-portraiture for the artist, was constructed using digital collage, which was then made into a screen with which the final work was then printed. The artist's face has been superimposed over an existing photograph of Lee Harvey Oswald; however through the layering and screen printing process the two images have completely melded seamlessly into one. For years Gonzales has been exploring the idea of historical representation, patriotism, political power and responsibility, both of the viewer and the artist. In Self Portrait as a Young Marine, Gonzales presents himself both as patriot and dissident.
Wayne Gonzales' recent solo exhibitions have included Judge-Vincent Katz & Wayne Gonzales, Paula Cooper Gallery, NY (publication), project 3-Wayne Gonzales, Mason Gross Galleries, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, Le Consortium, Dijon and Reali Arte Contemporanea, Brescia, Italy, among others.
